Self-Defence and Karate at Australian Fitness and Martial Arts
Australian Fitness and Martial Arts (AFMA) caters for a wide range of students. They include elements of exercise, relaxation and self-defence. The goal of our Martial Arts program is not necessarily to progress through the different kyu grades; if a student gets what he or she needs from the experience, then the training is a success. We at AFMA have a good and strong work ethic. Most students end up advancing to higher levels (their Black Belt) to achieve their goal by coming to class regularly over a prolonged period.
For children we have a special Children's Fitness and Martial Arts Program (See Children's Program).
Parents enrolling their children in Martial Arts classes should look for a school with an open atmosphere, which we here at AFMA provide. Parents are able and encouraged to watch their children’s classes. Our qualified instructors will be trained to encourage and give positive reinforcement and assist in increasing self-esteem and confidence. Since children and adults learn at a different pace, we at AFMA teach children at their pace to give them the best chance to learn and understand what they are being taught. But parents are welcome to be more involved and may join in and get started with karate or with a general AFMA-Fitness class.
It is important to mention, AFMA is about a positive atmosphere and fun when learning fitness and martial arts. At no time is it to be misused as a form of aggression or provocation. Any misuse will not be tolerated.
We at AFMA teach a combination of Traditional Shotokan Karate based on Gichin Funakoshi and Masatoshi Nakayama (JKA) as well as Jujitsu and Aikido (AJF).
Our Karate Training Program is based on elements of Kihon (Basics), Kumite (Partner Training and Points Fighting) and Kata (Pattern work).
In our Self-defence program we teach techniques related to Jujitsu and Aikido principles.
AFMA is involved in sport Karate and Jujitsu competitions on a local, state and national level through our State body (QKA) and the Australian Karate Federation (AKF), as well as The Australian Jujitsu Federation (AJF-Inc.), which our club is associated with.
We have a recognised Grading Curriculum for our students who are grading from White Belt to Black Belt and higher.
Our Training incorporates also elements from other Martial Arts related styles such as Jujitsu, Aikido, Shitoryu and Gojoryu.
